Reasons to Refurbish this Ramadan

Hotels in the Gulf region can expect to experience low occupancy levels during June and July – as Ramadan combines with the soaring summer temperatures to cut down on the number of tourists and travellers booking into rooms.

During the same period last year the mercury hit 46°C! A significant factor in the fact that at the same time Dubai’s hotels were seeing an occupancy rate of just 41.2%, meaning that over half of the hotel’s rooms, restaurants, spas and facilities were empty or underused.

However hotel owners should not despair, as this should be seen as a rare opportunity to schedule in some downtime to refurbish and revitalise the venue without unduly inconveniencing customers or eating into profits.

Constant high levels of activity can lead to once pristine furnishings and interiors becoming faded, tired and stained, which isn’t the sort of image that any hospitality facility wants to convey. This is especially true of the floor which, despite often being the largest surface in a building, can be neglected in favour of other interior design elements.

A deteriorating floor finish can be a serious problem in the back of house areas, as while in customer facing spaces it gives a poor impression to visitors (which is bad in itself), in the kitchens it can become a hygiene nightmare! Methyl methacrylate (MMA) enhanced resin floors are a great way to bring an aging floor back to life during a hotel renovation project.

These types of floors are especially useful during a Ramadan refurbishment, as they are able to fully cure within only two hours. This fast cure advantage means that a new floor can easily be applied within the 13 hours of quiet daylight. This gets the work and operational downtime out of the way while no one is around, delivering a floor that is ready and functional for the busier evening period, when patrons will be arriving for the grand Iftar celebrations, buffets and banquets.

An MMA floor’s incredible bond strength and high compressive strengths means that building operators have no need to sacrifice functionality and longevity for a rapid installation. The deep penetrating primers and thermoplastic fusing of the MMA system creates an unbreakable bond with the substrate that ensures a long lasting floor finish. This durability avoids the inconvenience, hassle and costs of an early floor failure or of having to schedule in another refurbishment.
