It was last October when we first wrote about The Macallan’s distillery, located in Craigellachie, Scotland.
Looking more like an art exhibition than a food and beverage facility, we recognised the architectural masterpiece that The Macallan is, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to see it making TIME Magazine’s list of the ‘World’s Greatest Places 2019’!
Described by Benjamin Kemper of TIME Magazine as something you’d expect to see if, “The Lord of the Rings’ Hobbiton were colonised by aliens”, it is celebrated for its sloping grass rooftops and wildflower enclosed stone pathways, putting the Scottish Highlands on the architectural map!
This is not the first time The Macallan has been recognised however, after the FeRFA award for Large Industrial Project of the Year 2018 was awarded to Flowcrete and IFT in recognition of the work at The Macallan!
And we can see why.
Described by the project director as “building a skyscraper on its side in the Highlands”, this distillery and visitor centre is an architectural monument built on The Macallan’s traditional Speyside estate.
It is not just the exterior that is a visual masterpiece. The attention to detail in the interior is just as spell binding.
Starting in the visitor centre, which features an interactive exhibition showcasing a model of the original family home located on the 485-acre estate, the detail from the grey resin flooring to the sloping ceilings and glass walls is breath-taking.
The interior design extends well into the production centre of The Macallan, presenting a welcoming space for tours around the famous distillery. Even the safety barriers match the exterior pipework and support system.
One room that stands alone when it comes to aesthetics, however, is the Cask Room. This hidden gem encapsulates the distillery’s reputation for the extraordinary, characterised by the exceptional oak casks, for which The Macallan is renowned.
If you are taking the advice of TIME Magazine, and making visiting this stunning destination a priority, make sure the Cask Room is at the top of your list.
