Colourful Flooring for LEGOLAND®

LEGO-Lands a Colourful Refurbishment

It’s no secret that we love a bit of brand identity reflected in great flooring. In fact, we’ve written a whole host of blog posts on the matter!

There are several commercial and industrial sites that use flooring as an extension of their brand, whether they add a hint of light catching aggregate to reflect an air of luxury, or use coloured flooring to mirror a brand logo.

Whilst this can be both subtle and effective, we absolutely love it when brands can fully let loose with colour. A prime example of this can be seen in the ‘Big Shop’ at the LEGOLAND® Malaysia resort.

The Big Shop can be found at the entrance to the theme park

The resort located in Johor is home to more than 70 rides, slides, attractions and shows aimed at families and children aged 2-12 years old. This action packed attraction is the first of its kind in Asia, and is the largest in the world, covering an area the size of 50 football pitches!

Nestled inside this resort, you can find the ‘Big Shop’; a large store that welcomes visitors at the entrance to the theme park.

Coloured blocks lead the way

With this being one of the first sights before entering the park, first impressions were key…and what a sight to behold.

Feast your eyes

Outside the store, a refurbishment of the cracked and failing floor was required, and a seamless, hardwearing polyurethane coating system was chosen.

The coating system, installed in a custom dark grey colour was laid in a bespoke weaving path bordered by tiles.

Colourful building block-style squares, found across the entire resort, were also painted directly onto the deck coating, successfully constructing a clear and colourful pathway to the fantastically vibrant store itself.

Not a brand to shy away from colour, LEGOLAND’s® ‘Big Store’ chose a custom yellow colour for the interior polyurethane floor finish!

As well as reflecting the bright yellow featured on the majority of LEGO’s® packaging, this custom colour also mirrored the yellow within LEGO’s® logo.

The colour yellow is also known as the colour of optimism and happiness – ideal for the entrance to a fun-filled day of LEGOLAND® adventure!

Built to last

Beneath the striking visual appearance, each flooring system chosen for the ‘Big Shop’ was done so for usability just as much as aesthetics.

Take the exterior of the store for example. The coating system used contains an advanced moisture dissipation barrier, shielding the floor from rising moisture, which could easily damage unprotected surfaces.

The added anti-slip finish also helps to make the site safer for visitors and staff, especially during periods of heavy rainfall or if slippery substances such as soft drinks or sunscreen have spilled onto the floor.

Slip resistance and UV protection was incredible important for the exterior pathway

In a similar way, the seamless and durable nature of the robust polyurethane coating within ‘Big Shop’ made it ideal for the retail environment, as it could withstand prolonged periods of heavy foot traffic, as well as the impacts, point loading, spillages, scuffs and scrapes inherent to busy commercial spaces.

Using a single colour also means that any dropped items would clearly show up on the floor – which is incredibly helpful when your stock consists of hundreds of thousands of small LEGO® pieces!

A single, bold colour meant that any dropped items would be easily visible

A UV resistant floor sealer was also required inside the store in order to protect the glossy, bold finish from fading in strong sunlight.

So there you have it – the newly refurbished LEGOLAND® ‘Big Shop’ flooring, deconstructed into flooring-related pieces.

Now, who will be the first to build a replica store from LEGO®?
